Gaps in Comsol

Hello all,
I have a few issues with gaps in Comsol, i have two curved objects near each other. I have defined the facing edges as contact pairs and now i have an expression acting (some thermal event) on this contact pair boundaries which depend on the distance, i have tried to include the variable gap_cp1 in the expression (for cp1 pairs) but Comsol complains about gap_cp1 is not defined, i am wondering am i doing anything wrong or how would any of you would approach this. the region between the contact pairs is unmeshed and unoccupied by any other object.
Any help would be appreciated.
