Modeling Overview: Optoelectronic Devices

You can use COMSOL Multiphysics® with the Wave Optics Module and Semiconductor Module add-on products to model various optoelectronic devices. In this previously held, brief webinar, you will get an introduction to the software and an overview of the Wave Optics Module and Semiconductor Module.

You will see both modules in action during a demonstration of how to build a PIN photodiode model. The contributions of each module as well as the features used to simulate the photodiode are outlined here:

  • Wave Optics Module — Electromagnetic Waves, Frequency Domain interface
    • Incident electromagnetic radiation
  • Semiconductor Module — Semiconductor interface
    • Doping and the electrical contacts

In the demonstration, the Optical Transitions feature is discussed and then used to define a direct band gap transition model with spontaneous emission and stimulated absorption and emission. Semiconductor Electromagnetic Waves Coupling is also added for coupling the physics between the two previously listed interfaces.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®, although you may notice small differences between versions. Learn more about using the Wave Optics Module and Semiconductor Module for simulating optoelectronic devices by visiting their respective product pages.
