COMSOL 4.0 Update

This cumulative update includes corrected documentation and corrects several bugs in the help functionality and physics interfaces. Update Details.


Check your version

Make sure that you run COMSOL version or later. On the Help menu, click About COMSOL Multiphysics to check your version. If you have an earlier build number, contact your COMSOL sales representative to get the official release of COMSOL 4.0 before you proceed.

Delete old resources


Exit any running sessions of COMSOL. Check in the Windows Task Manager and end any COMSOL processes or, alternatively, reboot your computer. Locate your home directory. On Windows XP, this is usually C:\Documents and Settings\[login_name]\. On Windows Vista and 7, it is usually C:\Users\[login_name]\. In your home directory, delete the subdirectory .comsol/v40. Also delete /ver40, if it exists.


Exit any running sessions of COMSOL. In your home directory, locate the subdirectory .comsol/v40 and delete it. Also delete /ver40 if it exists.


Exit any running sessions of COMSOL. In your home directory, locate the subdirectory Library/Preferences/COMSOL/v40 and delete it. Also delete /ver40 if it exists.

Run the downloaded .exe-file to extract the update to the COMSOL 4.0 installation directory, for example C:\COMSOL40.


Copy the downloaded .zip-file to the COMSOL 4.0 installation directory:

cp [installdir]/comsol40

where [installdir] is the root of the installation, for example /usr/local. Unzip it by the commands:

cd [installdir]/comsol40
unzip -o

If you have not disabled SELinux, run the following command:

chcon -t textrel_shlib_t [installdir]/comsol41/lib/[platform]/lib*

where platform is glnx86 or glnxa64.


Double-click the downloaded .dmg file to mount the disk image. In the Finder, open the mounted disk and double-click the COMSOL installer icon.

Check your installation

  1. Start COMSOL Multiphysics.
  2. On the Help menu, click About COMSOL Multiphysics.
  3. Check that the version number is (If not, the installation did not succeed).

Update Details

The periodic updates are cumulative, meaning the latest update contains all previous updates for version 4.0. The contents of each update are listed below., Released May 21 2010

This update adds corrected model documentation and addresses software instabilities when using the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) interface, and when using the difference operation on 3D geometries. The following documentation is updated:

General Fixes

  • Several failing links and searches in the dynamic help system have been fixed
  • COMSOL 4.0 with LiveLink™ for MATLAB® activated now works on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3
  • Hardcopy printing from Linux platforms now works
  • Stray error messages or program halts when opening certain model-MPH files have been fixed
  • Various license checkout issues for certain physics features have been fixed
  • Various stability issues and documentation errors have been fixed


  • Conductance computation in the Terminal boundary condition has been fixed
  • Improved solver default settings for the Electric Currents interface, Frequency Domain

Chemical Species Transport

  • The impact of the diffusivity in the Free Flow feature in the Free and Porous Media Flow interface has been corrected
  • The plot variable Volatilization in the Solute Transport interface now has the correct sign

Fluid Flow

  • Fluid load is now correctly computed in the Fluid-Structure Interaction interface
  • Massless particle tracing now works without error messages

Heat Transfer

  • In the physics interfaces Joule Heating, Induction Heating, and Microwave Heating, the Electromagnetic Heat Source feature has been corrected for the Frequency-transient study type

Radio Frequency

  • A problem with incorrectly computed transmission coefficient for two-port devices of some configurations has been fixed

Structural Mechanics

  • The kinematic hardening option in elastoplastic models has been corrected
  • The Rigid Connector feature now works for all situations
