Introduction to Modeling Small Acoustic Devices

You can use COMSOL Multiphysics® with the Acoustics Module add-on to model the acoustics of small devices, including transducers, mobile devices, microphones, and hearing aids. In this previously held webinar, we provide a brief introduction to the COMSOL Multiphysics® software and the Acoustics Module and cover what "small" means when referring to small acoustic devices. The modeling challenges for these types of devices are discussed, addressing questions such as:

  • How much detail is needed?
  • Does the mechanism need to be fully coupled or one-way coupled?
  • Is using a lumped approximation sufficient?

The discussion also goes over how to handle several different geometric length scales and account for the complex physical effects that dominate on such scales and any multiphysics effects.

Thereafter, we go over the multiphysics functionality available for simulating these types of applications, such as impedance model options. We then demonstrate how to build a model of a miniature loudspeaker, in which a detailed model overview is provided.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®. You may notice small differences between versions. Learn more about the Acoustics Module here.
