Initial values in mathematics module

I am a bit unclear as to how the initial values are used in solving certain PDEs. For example, for the Heat Equation PDE, we are prompted to enter initial values in time for both the variable of interest and the first partial derivative in time for that variable. However, the heat equation is only first order in time - why do two boundary conditions need to be specified? Thanks for any input on this.
