Electric field / current density on the surface

I'm starting to use COMSOL for electric field simulation from the application of direct current. I am evaluating the electric field and current density on the surface of an inner domain. When trying to verify the electric field internal to the domain I used the up/down and side functions (same result). I verified that the values returned by ec.normE/ec.normJ are equal to (up+down)/2. That is, the value on the surface is the average value of each of the adjacent domains. Is that right or did I miss something?
