laser beam

Hi,
I am a beginner.
I want to model a laser beam or a pulse heat source.....so that it hits the piece of metal at a particular location (defined).
Say the metals width =4mm and height =2mm located at the centre
and i want to drill a hole of R=0.5mm on the top .

Pabs =Po*(1-rho) is the power taking into account the reflectivity. It is the actual power that is being absorbed by the plate.
Po is the initial laser power w/m2.

I could generate a piecewise function
0*(x<-R/2)+Pabs*(x>=-R/2)-Pabs*(x>=R/2) which gives a pulse of width 0.5mm with magnitude =Pabs

But i am unable to use this function as my heat source.
You are welcome if you could suggest the other ways of solving this.

Hope I made it clear.
Can any one help me on this.
Thanks in advance...!
