NORCE Research AS

NORCE is a leading independent research institute dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation. Based in Norway, NORCE collaborates with both public and private sectors to empower informed, sustainable decision-making for a better future. Its research spans energy, healthcare, climate, the environment, society, and technology — addressing key societal challenges and driving value creation at local, national, and global scales.

Areas of Expertise

The Modeling and Simulation research group, part of NORCE’s Energy & Technology department, has many years of experience working on industrial problems with the use of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

The group's members have core competence and research activities in process and product optimization, with a focus on the modeling of:

  • Metallurgical processes

  • Industrial production and products

  • Energy systems

They address tasks that are varied and characterized by coupling between several physical phenomena. For the process industry, for example, they develop models for complex high-temperature processes involving electromagnetics, heat transport, flow of material, and chemical reactions.

NORCE’s researchers have both the academic background and industrial experience to model and optimize a broad spectrum of processes and equipment.

Some of the ways they use COMSOL Multiphysics® include:

  • Equipment design

  • Process and product optimization

  • Process control

  • Failure mode analysis

  • Modeling-based concept evaluation

Below are several examples of their simulations created using COMSOL Multiphysics®:

Conclusion

Models are built on a sound understanding of industrial challenges and are adapted to customer needs. Once a task is identified, NORCE assesses which modeling and simulation method is best suited to handle the challenge efficiently. Its team members deliver services ranging from observation to optimization, including decision support and innovation. With their expertise and experience, they use modeling to make fact-based decisions.
