Question about Adaptive Mesh Refinement - COMSOL

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

I am trying to simulate a point heat source that follows a spiral path in 2D. I want to have a fine mesh around the heat source (where thermal gradients are more marked), but coarser in the rest of the model.
If I define the Error Indicator as "sqrt(Tx^2+Ty^2)", the refinement works well, but then (when the source moves away and the thermal gradients are not so marked), the mesh doesn't recover its original element size. It remains being fine.

What can I do to return to a coarse mesh in areas distant to the source, once it has moved away? I attach the .mph model.

Thanks in advance,

Itxaso

I would also like to know if it is possible to do this through the GUI. I don't see why it would be difficult to implement programmatically, either. Coarsen if error is below a certain threshold and refine if it is above...keeping error in a band of tolerance.

Hi Itxaso:

I have computed your model. But the result is different from yours. Refinement works well. The mesh of heated area become coarse again.

NDF also fluctuated.

Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 4089.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 4072.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3476.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 2822.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3176.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3344.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3164.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3358.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3417.
Number of degrees of freedom solved for: 3188.

I work on 4.2.0.228
