PML or PEC?

Hi

I'am doing a simulation with RF module. It's about the mode analysis of a rib silicon waveguide.

When defining the boundary of the model which method is preferred to use, PML (Perfect Matched Layer) or PEC (Perfect Electric Conductor)?

I would like to try to avoid any result being affected by reflection from the boundary. Can you use both or is one of the preferred?

Hi,

if you want to avoid reflections then the choice should be easy: The PML (ideally) doesn't reflect anything, the PEC reflects everything. Typically you would use a PEC to simplify the modeling of highly conductive metals such as silver, copper or aluminium if frequencies are not too high.
