Photonic crystal fiber

I am trying to model a photonic crystal fiber with liquid crystal filled holes..

I am a starter and it would be really helpful if any one can help me regarding the resources from where i can learn the modelling steps and methods...

Start by simulating the step index fiber (find it at the model gallery).

Then you can start by modifying that model and inserting the air-holes. Finally you can go an insert the liquid crystals.

I have tried simple models....
I am having doubt regarding creating PML layers and boundary conditions...
Is creating a PML necessary thing?
I heard from a friend that it is enough to keep 'scattering boundary conditions' options instead of PML.

you can always start with 'scattering boundary conditions'. But generally, PMLs perform better.

It depends on how important are the radiation losses for you.

In case you do not need to know precisely the radiation losses, then I will go with the Comsol's PML just to prevent spurious reflections to have an influence on your results.

You can obtain the effective index equation from the top of the profile obtained after simulation.

Hi Uday,

Have you obtained the intensity profile for your model?
If so, you can see your effective index above it. The real part corresponds to the effective index.
It will correspond to the first solver parameter.
You can see the other values too from the post processing menu.
