Features like this should at best not be meshed, but instead be handled with appropriate boundary conditions. In your case you might consider to try 'thin elastic layer' and/or contact BCs. Of course all depends on what your objectives with the model are.

I have tried removing the thin squares and using it as a thin elastic layer, but I cannot find a way to set the thickness in the squares. Is this possible? I do not want the cylinder and cradle to touch. Thanks.

I now know that there is no thickness parameter on the thin elastic layer option. I need to specify a thickness, so I cannot use this. I have made the model with a specified thickness (attached to first post). Is there anything else I can do with this meshing? Every mesh that I have tried cannot resolve this aspect ratio. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks very much.
Ultimately, the goal is to perform an integration over these connecting squares to find the energy lost in them (as well as another integral to find the energy lost in the domains). Thanks so much.

You might consider to define the surface around the patches as a thin elastic layer too, using a very low stiffness

Thanks for another response, Edgar! I'm not sure how this solves the problem, though. If these small features have to be meshed anyway (and I have not found a good way to do it), then what will a thin elastic layer do? If I use this, will I not need as fine of a mesh on the patches? Thanks again!
