Coupling of Richard's equation and Darcy's equation in solute transport modelling

Now, I have a model which has two layers, and the upper layer is unsaturated, the lower layer is saturated. The water table is at the junction of two layers. I have tried two methods. The first one is that I used Richard's equation to model the upper layer(unsaturated layer) and Darcy's equation to model the lower layer(saturated layer), and the pressure head was set to zero at the junction(groundwater table ) as the continuity condition, however the results showed that velocities in two layers can't keep continued at the junction.
Hence, I tried the second method. I saw the two layers as a whole and used only Richard's equation, in which "fluid and matrix properties" kept the same settings as previous Darcy's equation. Consequently, the velocities in two layers kept continued at the junction.
These two method should have obtained the same results, but the truth is different, can someone help me? Thanks a lot!
