This model of a two-story house can be used to examine a contaminant leak and the subsequent contaminant dispersion that occurs due to convection and diffusion. Airflow and recirculation within the home are dependent on vent placement, and flow velocity may also vary at each vent. Additionally, contaminants can pass through the HVAC system, potentially spreading to other rooms more quickly. The coupled airflow and species transport is considered within both the home and the HVAC piping system.
This tutorial model offers a starting point for HVAC design modeling aimed at mitigating the risks associated with hazardous contaminant leaks. While this example models the spread of a contaminant, a similar approach can be used to consider heating and cooling within a house.
