Ray Tracing of Pinhole Camera During a Solar Eclipse

Application ID: 129301

This model demonstrate how to simulate ray tracing in a pinhole camera viewing a solar eclipse. To keep the model dimensions in check, the Sun and Moon are approximated using planar discs with the appropriate angular size (~0.5 degree) relative to the pinhole.

In this example, the first study performs a parametric sweep of the Moon’s position to demonstrate the various stages of the solar eclipse. The second study performs a parametric sweep over the pinhole’s aperture radius to demonstrate the focusing effect of a smaller pinhole.

This model is inspired by the solar eclipse of April 8, 2024.
