Spanwise Rotating Turbulent Nonisothermal Channel Flow
Application ID: 144481
Turbulent flow, Elliptic Blending R-ε interface is used to analyze fully developed turbulent flow in a spanwise rotating channel. Due to the influence of Coriolis force on turbulence, profiles of the flow variables are skewed at moderate rotation rate. The asymmetry between cyclonic (stable) and anticyclonic (unstable) sides of the channel is observed.
Channel flow with sudden expansion exhibits two primary recirculation bubbles (each complemented by a secondary counter-rotating recirculation bubble). Moderate frame rotation reduces length of the bubble on the unstable side, while increasing length of the bubble on the stable side.
The Elliptic Blending R-ε turbulence model is able to capture the anisotropy of turbulence and treat it accurately in the momentum equation. In the scope of a nonisothermal flow, turbulence contribution to the temperature equation should also be accounted for. The Daly–Harlow (GGDH) thermal turbulence model accounts for it in an anisotropic way, ensuring accurate prediction of the temperature field.
