This research proposed a novel battery thermal management system that utilized the heat pipe coupling composite fin (HPCF) which consisted of aluminum fin, phase change material and liquid cooling tube. By using battery module, heat transfer module and CFD module of COMSOL, the electrochemical thermal and non-isothermal flow models of the thermal management system were established. Compared with the other passive systems, the HPCF displayed superior thermal performance and control the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference at 45.9 °C and 2 °C at the discharge rate of 2 C. By single parameter and response surface analysis, the comprehensive performance of the HPCF was improved by 22.19%. After adding the liquid cooling strategy with the optimization of flow velocities at different ambient temperature ranges, the system can not only meet the battery heat dissipation requirements in extreme environments such as 40 °C, but minimize the energy consumption and mechanical losses caused by frequent regulation of the flow velocity.
