compensate for hydrostatic pressure approximation

I am including gravity along with pressure boundary conditions in fluid flow simulations and see an option to "compensate for hydrostatic pressure approximation." I cannot find a description of this option in the documentation. What exactly does this do and does it imply certain assumptions about the flow (e.g. the flow being in hydrostatic equilibrium)?
