Poroelasticity Effects in a Stacked Lithium-Ion Battery Cell
Application ID: 149061
The electrodes of a lithium-ion battery are porous, consisting of an active solid material, a binder, and pores filled with liquid electrolyte. If a force is applied on the porous layers of a battery, this will affect the volume fraction of the electrolyte-filled pores in the electrodes, which in turn induces convection of the electrolyte. The intercoupling between solid mechanics and fluid mechanics in porous media is also called poroelasticity.
This example demonstrates how to model poroelasticity effects in a lithium-ion battery cell with a stacked configuration. This model, which is an extension of the Electrode-Expansion-Induced Convection in a Stacked Lithium-Ion Battery Cell example, also includes effects of volume fraction changes as a result of the lithium intercalation into the active electrode materials.
