A Phase Field Model of Fracture in Thermoelastic Solids

Application ID: 120931

This model demonstrates how to set up a phase field damage multiphysics model to predict crack propagation in thermoelastic solids under large deformations.

The crack-driving force depends on the principal stresses, which in turn depend on the temperature distribution in the solid through thermal expansion. Damage of the solid material causes a degradation in its thermal conductivity and an increase in heat convection across the newly created crack surfaces.
