If you are looking for an intensive introduction to optical and high-frequency electromagnetics simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics®, then this is the course for you. During this 4-day online course on wave and ray optics modeling using COMSOL Multiphysics®, you will develop a strong foundation for your electromagnetic modeling needs.

We will systematically introduce the fundamental building blocks that are essential for constructing your own models. First, we will focus on full-wave simulations to cover boundary conditions, meshing, and excitation methods and how these apply to specific examples of periodic structures, scattering, and wave guides. The course will then delve into the Beam Envelopes and Geometric Optics interfaces and how to use them to simulate structures that are electrically large in one or more directions.

To teach this course, we will use a combination of instructive and self-guided hands-on training and theoretical and practical lectures. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics® so that you feel comfortable working with the Wave Optics Module and Ray Optics Module. By the end of the course, you will know how to set up electromagnetic models, determine the appropriate boundary conditions and mesh settings, and use the result visualization tools.

  • Absorbing boundary conditions: Scattering Boundary Condition (SBC) and Perfectly Matched Layers (PML)
  • Meshing for electromagnetics

  • Beam Envelopes interface
  • Geometrical Optics interface

Suggested Background

This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of electromagnetic wave propagation. We recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the COMSOL Multiphysics® introductory course prior to attending this class.
